My November blog post “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture” has inspired yet another creative collaboration with Sommelier and wine writer Christopher Sawyer, who’s known for his movie and wine pairings.
I have been to many wine tasting and art receptions. The common challenge that I observe is that people can struggle with how to describe their experience of the art and the wine. “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.” *Explaining the inexplicable can create a particular awkwardness and sometimes a subtle intimidation. However, I noticed that when people are present and trust their observations they enthusiastically express their personal experiences, their excitement or their distaste.
I met Sommelier Christopher Sawyer at one of my art and wine receptions. He was so enthused about my paintings and he appreciated my exploration of light as color and my attempt to capture and savor a moment in time among the vines.
As I got to know Christopher, I could see that he possessed a complete passion for wine and I learned that he was once a music critic. I joined him at a wine tasting and he generously and patiently shared his vast knowledge and passion for wine. I saw his unique ability to describe the inexplicable in a way that was fun and approachable. I remember him chatting about the barnyard quality of wine by describing it as if he had just licked the horn of a unicorn. I always laugh out loud when we taste wine.
We’ve decided to pair up and to create art and wine pairing events. Watch for this creative collaboration coming to you soon.
